Be Mindful of These Foods That Promote Cancer


These days you might hear someone mention that “everything causes cancer.” Of course not everything does, but there are many foods commonly found in households that have been proven to increase cancer risk.  Here are some of the top cancer-causing foods:

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

Many people are aware that GMOs are not part of a cancer-free diet.  It has been shown that rapid tumor growth can occur from both GMOs and the chemicals used to grow them.  They are in everything, it seems.  Avoid them by looking out for certified organic, certified non-GMO and locally grown foods not made with use of biotechnology.

Microwave popcorn

The bags of this quick snack are lined with chemicals that are connected with causing liver, pancreatic and testicular cancers and infertility.  The diacetyl chemical in the actual popcorn is linked to causing damage and cancer to the lungs.

Processed meats

The majority of processed meats contain chemical preservatives that cause them to look more enticing and fresh, but can also significantly increase your risk for colon and other forms of cancer.  Examples of common meats that put you at risk are processed cold cuts, sausage, bacon, and hot dogs.  Choose uncured meat products without nitrates.


Chemicals found commonly in soda such as caramel color and 4-MI have been linked to causing cancer.  Soda is filled with sugars, food chemicals and coloring–it acidifies the body and feeds cancer cells, literally.

Diet foods and drinks

This is even worse than sugar-sweetened foods and drinks.  The European Food Safety Authority issued a scientific review of more than 20 different studies and found that aspartame causes birth defects, cancer and a variety of illnesses.  In addition, Splenda (sucralose), saccharin and other artificial sweeteners have been connected to causing cancer.

Refined flours (white flours)

This a popular ingredient in processed foods and is filled with excessive amounts of carbohydrates.  One study has shown that regular consumption of refined carbs was linked to a 220 percent increase in breast cancer among women.

Refined sugars

These sugars commonly used in processed foods, along with high fructose corn syrup (fructose-rich sweeteners being the most offensive) quickly spike insulin levels and feed cancer cells.

Farmed salmon

Another high-cancer food is farmed salmon, which lacks vitamin D and is often contaminated with carcinogenic chemicals, flame retardants, antibiotics, pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), according to an assessment from Dr. David Carpenter, Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University of Albany.

Hydrogenated oils

These oils keep processed foods preserved and shelf-stable.  They can cause a variety of serious diseases, including cancer, because they alter the flexibility and structure of membranes throughout one’s body.

“Dirty” fruits

Conventional fruits such as apples, grapes and strawberries can carry major cancer risks.  It has been found that up to 98 percent of all conventional produce, especially on the “dirty” fruits list, is contaminated with pesticides that cause cancer. Look for organic fruits and/or those verified to be pesticide-free.
