Much has been made of the negative impact a diet filled with meat, processed food and junk food can have on our bodies. But some are finding that the opposite is true for those who go the extra mile to eat a healthful diet. Eating healthy is good medicine, experts say. Those who are the healthiest strive for a gluten-free, sugar-free vegan diet. This is a strict regimen and takes some getting used to. But the benefits health-wise are incredible. In fact, one study showed eating such a diet had medicinal benefits more powerful than strong prescription painkillers when it came to alleviating pain. Another example is the case of Natasha Lipman. She suffers from a rare disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). This is where the connective tissue, such as ligaments and tendons, are too weak to keep the bones of the skeleton in place. Persons suffering this condition are in constant pain. The impact to daily activities is serious. The mere act of turning a doorknob can dislocate one’s fingers, for example.
Today, far from being bedridden as one might expect, Lipman carries on a full-time job as a web designer and blogs for bigtime outlets including the Huffington Post. Six months previous she thought she’d never set foot outside her bedroom door. Now she is cool, smiley and professional. One would think she was perfectly healthy. So how did Lipman come about this miracle turnaround? She takes part in what she calls a “plant-based, gluten free, refined sugar free, caffeine free, anti-inflammatory, high nutrient, long rotation diet.” She says she hardly ever eats anything out of a box or packet. Lipman has been so successful she leads a course at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition where students work to become integrative health coaches. She has plenty of recipes on her site: http://nutritiouslynatasha.com/. But Lipman also has a disclaimer that everyone’s body is different, and what may work for one person may not work for another. Health experts say preventative medicine, particularly eating a healthful diet, is one of the best ways to say healthy, happy and pain and disease free.
