In folk medicine, it was supposed to cure everything from warts to the flu. But scientific research has uncovered some interesting finds. One study out of Japan found that consuming apple cider vinegar actually helps you to lose weight. 175 obese participants who otherwise enjoyed normal health were given either apple cider vinegar or water to drink once per day for twelve weeks. Those who drank the vinegar lost more weight at the end of the study. The group given the vinegar weighed one to two pounds lighter. Though a subtle change it is still significant. Researchers believe apple cider vinegar may activate certain genes which in turn help to break down fat. It’s not a rapid way to lose weight but it does seem to help. Exercise, eating a healthy diet and portion control are other aspects to consider in a weight loss program.

Apple cider vinegar has been shown to help control blood sugar, and so manage diabetes. Carol Johnston, PhD is the director of the nutrition program at Arizona State University. She’s been studying the effects of this type of vinegar on glucose levels for a decade and believes it is on par with many medications. Apple cider vinegar actually blocks some starch digestion, while obstructs it from raising one’s blood-sugar. But you can’t exactly rely on treating diabetes with vinegar. What’s more, many diabetics have egastroparesis, and apple cider vinegar can make this condition worse. Talk to your doctor about it if you want to try taking apple cider vinegar as part of your diabetes management plan. Lastly, apple cider vinegar is good for digestion. If you buy the cloudy kind, it’s full of probiotics and helps with constipation. Just dilute one to two tablespoons in a glass of water, unless you want to add it in to your diet in some creative ways such as in sauces and salad dressings. If you stick with the mixture, you can drink it with your meals once or twice a day.
