The Difference between Essential and Nonessential Nutrients

To make sure you are the healthiest you can be, it’s important to get the right balance of the proper nutrients. You must include all of the basic four food groups. It’s important to understand the portion size of each. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Lean protein is important. Whole grains are essential to good health. Finally, a small amount of fat is important. Make sure you are getting the right kind. Unsaturated fats are the best: olive oil, grape seed oil, canola oil and others. Avoid saturated and trans fats.  Out of these food groups, the foods your body needs are called essential nutrients. Those that your body can make itself are nonessential nutrients. But how can you make sure your body is getting all the essential nutrients it needs?

The best way you can do that is eat a balanced diet. Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables you are eating. Make sure the majority of your diet consists of these.  The next most important is protein. Avoid red meat. Only eat it as a treat. Try to incorporate more plant base proteins like nuts, legumes and beans. Fish is quite healthy. Limit to one or two times a week for the fear of mercury. Poultry is good too. Make sure you are preparing these foods in healthy ways.  If you fail to get all the essential nutrients your body needs you risk health issues such as heart disease, cancer, depression, stroke, anemia and many others.
