We all experience a decrease of energy sometime during the day. Some of us feel it around eleven in the morning or so, right before lunch. Others slump around two or three. In a GrubHub Seamless poll 77% of respondents stated that they eat particular foods at a certain time of day for an energy boost. The problem is that most people grab unhealthy alternatives. Energy drinks are full of sugar, caffeine and chemicals. Cookies, chips, soda and other not so healthy items are usually eaten as well. Instead, why not try a healthy snack that will give you that boost of energy you need? For instance, why not try dark chocolate? Not only is it good for your heart containing antioxidants called flavonoids, it helps your brain wake up, too. In addition to the caffeine, it contains a compound called flavanols which increases blood flow to the brain. Just don’t go overboard. All that sugar isn’t good for you. A little goes a long way. But why not keep a bar in your desk?
Citrus fruit will wake you up, and it’s incredibly good for you. Just smelling it can stimulate the brain. Not to mention that they are full of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C which helps aid iron absorption. This in turn, will wake you up as iron helps your blood to carry more oxygen to your cells, letting them produce more energy and keeping you alert, sharp and focused. Oranges, clementines and tangerines are all good choices. Pineapple is good, too. If you have a refrigerator at work, why not keep some citrus fruit in there for those low energy points in the day? Another item to combat sluggishness, make sure you are drinking enough water. Dehydration causes your short-term memory to suffer. Just a glass on your desk will remind you to drink. It will also give you a little exercise and a short break, walking to the water cooler and back. Coffee or tea not only gives you a boost, they help you focus, increasing concentration and overall performance. So here are some good, healthy, natural ways to get over that energy slump.
