With so many pollutants in our environment, detoxifying periodically is more important than ever. These toxins can build up disrupting the endocrine, reproductive, and other bodily systems. One way to detoxify is to eat foods that will clear out the garbage, leaving you squeaky clean within. Healthy, whole, organic foods should be selected to minimize the amount of insecticides, fertilizers, and chemicals used during processing. Here are some great choices for detoxification.

Turmeric is a golden spice with an even more stellar reputation. It is most often found in the curry dishes of south Asia. Contained within is the phytochemical curcumin which has amazing anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to detoxifying the liver. Some cultures like the Italians, the Spanish, Greek, and others don’t consider a dish complete without adding garlic to it. A Mediterranean diet has been deemed one of the world’s healthiest, by the way. No surprise there. This common savory item packs a wallop, health-wise. It detoxifies the kidneys and the liver, in addition to sopping up free-radicals due to a nutrient called alliin. We in America often think of dandelions as weeds. The Irish, Italians, and many others eat dandelion greens in soups and salads. Whether eaten this way, or taken as an extract, this remarkable, yet under-recognized plant flushes the liver with bile, which helps your entire system. It is also a great source of potassium and iron.

We think of chlorophyll from our days in science class. But they should have included it in health class, in a lesson on nutrition. Chlorophyll found in leafy green vegetables and herbs can actually block carcinogens from entering the body. Make sure you eat plenty of them. Spinach, green beans, parsley, lettuce, arugula, kale, and so many more contain oodles of chlorophyll. Almonds have become trendy. But it looks like that trend is going to stick around for a while. Besides being jam-packed with minerals like magnesium, iron and calcium, as well as stabilizing blood sugar, they also clean the bowels of impurities. Want to treat your insides to a top to bottom scrub? Beets are an overall system cleanser. They scour the liver, purify the blood, help fight infection, and are loaded with minerals, too. Anyone who has had a urinary infection knows that drinking cranberry juice helps a lot. That’s because cranberries have antiviral and antibacterial properties, helping to mop up any nastiness in the urinary tract. If you like blueberries, eat them as often as you’d like. They are filled to the brim with proanthocyanidins, phytonutrients that are super at detoxifying your system. Include these foods into your diet and you’ll be Spic’n Span from the inside out.
